GUARDING
One thing that was important to us when we started this beautiful adventure of breeding Bordoodles was that our love and passion for the well-being of our dogs should always remain our top priority. We visited several quality breeders during our first years of breeding, trying to absorb as much information and advice as possible. One thing we did not want to consider was the idea of literally owning a "pack of dogs". The facilities needed and the life of the dogs was not what we really wanted. Our dogs are integral members of our family. Yes, we produce litters of puppies - but above all, they are our beloved companions. We simply couldn't imagine the idea of our dogs sleeping in cages and being more connected to each other than to our family. We also realized that a dog's temperament when living in a pack and kennel is somewhat different from that of dogs living at home. I wasn't sure if I had a large enough gene pool to be very picky about which dogs I crossed with whom and when, without owning a large number of dogs. But I also wasn't okay with the idea of having multiple dogs living a "kennel life". Then... we met Danielle who was breeding quality Bordoodles, and she introduced us to the "Maisons de Gardiennage" system.
A foster family is carefully interviewed and selected to own one of our breeding dogs. The dog lives with this family for its entire life. We will always be the dog's "home away from home" and his second family. But the family he lives with permanently is called his guardian family. This is where the dog grows up, gets trained, attends Christmas parties, vacations and family photos. He is a beloved member of the family, as every dog deserves.
Ideally, we find janitors in our area and because they were born here and spend their first 10 weeks of life here, they know us well and know our routine. They walk in the door and immediately feel at home. Everything about breeding happens here, whether it's a male visiting to have a date with one of our females or a female coming to give birth and raise a litter of puppies. The dog returns to his family after mating and/or after the natural weaning of his litter.
There is no cost for a Guardian puppy. There are, however, several reasonable requirements and protocols. We pay for everything related to reproduction, including genetic testing of various types, progesterone testing, ultrasounds, semen analysis, etc. Guardians pay for all normal dog care, supplements, grooming, vaccinations, parasite prevention, dog training, etc. We establish a very clear diet and protocol for our janitors to follow to keep all our breeding dogs in optimal physical and mental health.
Unlike many breeders who own multiple dogs and simply "relocate" their retired breeding dogs, our dogs do not have to undergo such a tragic change. They stay with their guardian family and full ownership is transferred to the family after retirement.
The life span of our breeding dogs is exactly the same as any other Borderdoodles. Depending on the dog and sex of the dog the period of care ends after 3 or 4 litters for a female and for males it is much easier and we can also pay you at each visit.
